Middleweight world champion GGG speaks
“It’s the biggest day for me,” says the Kazakhstani fighter.
“He’s (Brook) very strong. It’s the biggest test for me.”
Pretty short and sweet from GGG, but that’s why fans love him, he does all the talking with his fists.
IBF Welterweight world champion Kell Brook speaks
“I’ve looked down in history and the greats have gone on, like Sugar Ray Leonard, to win titles in the heavier divisions,” said Brook.
“To be a great fighter, you have to do great things. For me, a welterweight, to step up against one of the most feared fighters in the world, I’ll have to do everything right. If I don’t, I’ll come up short.
“That’s what you have to do to reach greatness. When it was floated, I jumped at the chance. I’m doing it for the fans.”
Abel Sanchez, GGG’s trainer, has compared Golovkin v Brook to some of the sport’s classics.
“It could be like De La Hoya v Hopkins, or Tito Trinidad v Hopkins.
“Hopefully this is a fight we will remember for a long time.”
Kell Brook’s trainer, Dominic Ingle, has touted the clash as the biggest in the sport this year.
“It’s not an impossible task,” said the illustrious trainer. “Kell Brook wants to become a great fighter.
“On September 10, this is going to be the fight of 2016. Kell Brook will relish the challenge.”
Sky Sports Boxing’s Adam Smith back Brook to do the business
Sky Sports Boxing’s Adam Smith has been speaking.
The former commentator says Brook will come of age against Golovkin.
Brook failed to capitalise on his big win against Shawn Porter in 2014 and knows a win here will propel him into stardom.
Brook also ducked by fighters?
It is well documented that GGG has been ducked by some of the best fighters in the middleweight division.
But Brook, too, appears to have been swerved by fighters this summer.
A fight with Miguel Cotto was floated, but the Puerto Rican seemingly turned down the opportunity.
Rapid negotiations for fight
After the problems encountered with Eubank Jr and other fighters, Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says the Brook fight was sorted in just two days.
Brook, seemingly frustrated by slow negotiations for his own world title defence lined up against Jessie Vargas, jumped at the chance. Many feel that the Sheffield fighter has nothing to lose.
GGG’s belts on show
Brook’s IBF welterweight title will not be on the line on September 10.
GGG’s collection of middleweight titles will be on the line though.
Brook will be looking to create history and feels a win will propel him to the top of the pound-for-pound rankings.
Pre-sale tickets snapped up in quick time
Tickets went like hot cakes earlier today.
Matchroom Boxing put the Fight Pass pre-sale allocation on sale at midday.
It sold out in less than 10 minutes leaving hundreds of fans disappointed.
The general sale allocation will go sale tomorrow.
Can Brook pull off the unthinkable to become the unified middleweight world champion and beat Golovkin?
After weeks of negotiations to make Gennady Golovkin v Chris Eubank Jr, the boxing world was shocked when it was announced that GGG will fight IBF welterweight world champion Kell Brook on September 10.
Golovkin, who is ranked at the top of the sport’s mythical pound-for-pound rankings, will defend his unified WBA (Super), WBC and IBF middleweight world titles.
Brook will make the jump up to the 160 pound middleweight limit having never operated above the 147 pound welterweight limit.
The Kazakhstani fighter has received criticism for fighting a much smaller opponent, though he has encountered trouble finding an opponent in his division due to his ferocious power.
Likewise, Brook has failed to land a big fight since picking up the IBF world strap over two years ago against Shawn Porter due to a combination of injury and an inability to attract the best welterweights in the sport to the UK.
Eubank Jr’s father and former world champion, Chris, reportedly made outrageous demands in negotiations with Matchroom Boxing, which pushed promoter Eddie Hearn to offer the fight to Brook.
Stay with us for updates from the first press-conference in New York for this huge clash.Golovkin and Brook, along with their respective trainers Abel Sanchez and Dominic Ingle, went through the motions in the ring before the Sky Sports team interviewed them both. The whole event kicked off with the popular Conor Benn working out, along with world title challenger Charlie Edwards and the man he is facing, John Riel Casimero, as well as IBF bantamweight champion Lee Haskins.
The two fighters have gone head to head and Brook is as big as Golovkin.
Notorious for squeezing down to the welterweight limit, Brook says he will enjoy this camp and be able to eat properly throughout. No verbals to speak of, both men are highly respectful of each other.
